Top ath­le­tes are top ath­le­tes becau­se they put in a lot of work. A high trai­ning workload requi­res ade­qua­te nutri­tion, other­wi­se the engi­ne will ine­vi­ta­b­ly stut­ter. In many sports, the­re is the addi­tio­nal chall­enge that body weight limits per­for­mance and ath­le­tes need to be as light and lean as possible. 

Wha­te­ver the back­ground, an ina­de­qua­te ener­gy sup­p­ly is detri­men­tal to per­for­mance and, not least, health. This pro­blem is descri­bed in the sym­ptom com­plex RED‑S (rela­ti­ve ener­gy def­fi­ci­en­cy in sport) . A cen­tral topic that all tho­se invol­ved in top-class sport need to know about.
