We used to joke that if you were too slow for the Olym\u00adpic tri\u00adath\u00adlon, you\u2019d end up doing the Iron\u00adman distance\u200a\u2014\u200athat was 25 years ago. Today, it can\u2019t be too long or too extre\u00adme: \u201cUltra\u201d has long been a trend\u200a\u2014\u200anot exact\u00adly tele\u00adge\u00adnic, but very Insta\u00adgramma\u00adble<\/em>. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, I draw the line whe\u00adre sleep beco\u00admes neces\u00adsa\u00adry. Or rather, whe\u00adre \u201cstay\u00ading awa\u00adke\u201d impro\u00adves my per\u00adfor\u00admance. I\u2019m no lon\u00adger inte\u00adres\u00adted in that kind of grue\u00adling effort\u200a\u2014\u200aI can do it wit\u00adhout the stress and a race num\u00adber, but not in a race against the clock. And that\u2019s exact\u00adly whe\u00adre the first edi\u00adti\u00adon of the \u201cInto the World\u201d ultra took place. Cycling around Vor\u00adarl\u00adberg on a gra\u00advel bike\u200a\u2014\u200a310 km and 8,000 meters of ele\u00adva\u00adti\u00adon gain\u200a\u2014\u200awas the draw. <\/p>\n

My goal was to com\u00adple\u00adte the cour\u00adse in 16\u200a\u2013\u200a17 hours\u200a\u2014\u200aand, for once, not just to design and teach fue\u00adling stra\u00adte\u00adgies, but to put them into prac\u00adti\u00adce mys\u00adelf. Pro\u00adper carb-loa\u00adding over the last 48 hours befo\u00adre the start and a con\u00adsis\u00adt\u00adent\u00adly high inta\u00adke of car\u00adbo\u00adhy\u00addra\u00adtes from sports drinks and gels along the way. <\/p>\n

In the end, it couldn\u2019t have gone any bet\u00adter. My form, the expe\u00adri\u00adence, the adven\u00adture, and my per\u00adfor\u00admance were all spec\u00adta\u00adcu\u00adlar\u200a\u2014\u200aI won the event in 16h 28min (net) and 17h 09\u2032 inclu\u00adding down\u00adti\u00adme (bio\u00adbreaks, refil\u00adling water, mar\u00adve\u00adling at the sun\u00adset over Lake Con\u00ads\u00adtance). Or to put it this way: actions, not just words; exe\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon, not just dry theory. <\/p>\n
