For just over a year, I was able to prepa\u00adre the Swiss ama\u00adteur bike team \u00abAli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00bb with Patric Tin\u00adner and Sime\u00adon Nie\u00adde\u00adrer for their par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adon in the Cape Epic, an MTB stage race in South Afri\u00adca. In addi\u00adti\u00adon to nut\u00adri\u00adtio\u00adnal advice and sup\u00adport during pre\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon and at the com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon, my job also included the enti\u00adre trai\u00adning plan\u00adning and orga\u00adniza\u00adti\u00adon in the 12 months befo\u00adre the race. Patric and Sime\u00adon were aiming for a podi\u00adum finish in the ama\u00adteur cate\u00adgo\u00adry and wan\u00adted to have a serious say in the cate\u00adgo\u00adry win.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the pre\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon year, we were able to com\u00adple\u00adte 2 trai\u00adning camps in Stel\u00adlen\u00adbosch (Wes\u00adtern Cape, South Afri\u00adca). In ever\u00ady\u00adday life, it was important to find the opti\u00admal balan\u00adce bet\u00adween work, fami\u00adly and trai\u00adning. With bet\u00adween ten and 18 hours per week for bike trai\u00adning, strength and the usual\u00adly negle\u00adc\u00adted rege\u00adne\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon, it was often a hot dance on the edge of the volcano.<\/p>\n

At the 20th edi\u00adti\u00adon of the race, a pro\u00adlo\u00adgue time tri\u00adal (approx. 70\u2032 race dura\u00adti\u00adon) and seven dai\u00adly stages (bet\u00adween 3.5 and 5 hours race dura\u00adti\u00adon) had to be com\u00adple\u00adted in 8 days. The cour\u00adse of the race is rare\u00adly very tech\u00adni\u00adcal, which makes the race all the fas\u00adter and often leads to defects in the rough ter\u00adrain. In addi\u00adti\u00adon to the heat of the South Afri\u00adcan late sum\u00admer, the cumu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adve stress of 8 days of racing is a par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar hurd\u00adle for the non-pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnals, which often mani\u00adfests its\u00adelf in the second half of the race: diges\u00adti\u00adve pro\u00adblems, infec\u00adtions, a drop in per\u00adfor\u00admance or an incre\u00adasing num\u00adber of cra\u00ads\u00adhes becau\u00adse con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon is no lon\u00adger as high take their toll.<\/p>\n

Team \u00abAli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00adli\u00bb has cho\u00adsen a very pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal set up, whe\u00adre the dri\u00advers could focus on racing and reco\u00adve\u00adring thanks to their own mecha\u00adnic, dri\u00adver and me as cook\/\u200bsoigneur\/\u200bperformance mana\u00adger and coach.<\/p>\n

You can wri\u00adte a book about a week like that, and not just as a dri\u00adver. We, the staff, also expe\u00adri\u00adence highs, lows, curio\u00adsi\u00adties and inten\u00adse pas\u00adsio\u00adna\u00adte moments that make up the appeal of such a com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon. The out\u00adstan\u00adding con\u00adsis\u00adten\u00adcy of Patric and Sime\u00adon and how they were able to call up and exceed their poten\u00adti\u00adal day after day allows a con\u00adcise sum\u00adma\u00adry: from the first day onwards, the two of them took second place over\u00adall and on 5 days also con\u00adfi\u00addent second stage places. The win\u00adners, two pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal ath\u00adle\u00adtes from Lat\u00advia, were untoucha\u00adble. Howe\u00adver, the view of our per\u00adfor\u00admance, their per\u00adfect exe\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon, no mecha\u00adni\u00adcals, ill\u00adnesses or ailm\u00adents make me proud of the two ath\u00adle\u00adtes and the enti\u00adre campaign.<\/p>\n

It was a gre\u00adat expe\u00adri\u00adence \u2013 not just the one week of racing, but the enti\u00adre pro\u00adject over 15 months. For me, it was once again pro\u00adven how inva\u00adluable it is to accom\u00adpa\u00adny ath\u00adle\u00adtes during trai\u00adning and com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon, to see how con\u00adcepts work or fail and to make the neces\u00adsa\u00adry decis\u00adi\u00adons quickly.<\/p>\n
